Bogotá, Colombia – In a bold move highlighting growing tensions over regional security, Colombian President Gustavo Petro has ordered the nation’s public security forces to suspend intelligence sharing with U.S. agencies. The decision comes amid mounting criticism over U.S. operations targeting boats in the Caribbean, which Petro claims endanger human rights.
“The fight against drugs must be subordinated to the human rights of the Caribbean people,” President Petro said in a post on X, emphasizing Colombia’s long-standing collaboration with the U.S. in combating drug trafficking.
The president’s announcement underscores a shift in Colombia’s approach to bilateral security cooperation, prioritizing local human rights over longstanding anti-narcotics intelligence coordination. U.S. attacks on vessels suspected of transporting illicit substances have reportedly resulted in collateral damage to civilians and local communities, according to Colombian officials.
While the suspension is temporary, Petro stated that intelligence sharing will resume only once Washington halts operations deemed harmful to the Caribbean populace. Analysts suggest the move could strain Colombia-U.S. security cooperation, which has historically been a cornerstone of counter-narcotics and regional anti-trafficking efforts.
The Colombian administration has also emphasized that domestic anti-drug operations will continue, but with stricter oversight to prevent violations of international human rights norms. The decision reflects Petro’s broader agenda of integrating human rights considerations into law enforcement and security policies.
Experts note that this suspension may prompt diplomatic discussions between Bogotá and Washington to find a balanced approach that protects both regional security and civilian rights. For now, Colombian authorities are reviewing the protocols and communication channels with U.S. intelligence partners to ensure compliance with national priorities.
