The sea trials of China's latest aircraft carrier, named after the Fujian province, commenced recently, marking a significant milestone in the nation's naval expansion efforts. With a focus on enhancing its maritime capabilities, China aims to challenge the global dominance of the US Navy.
The Fujian carrier, the country's third aircraft carrier, sets a new standard as the largest and most advanced vessel of its kind ever built by China. Departing from Shanghai's Jiangnan Shipyard, the carrier's trials will rigorously assess the reliability and stability of its propulsion and electrical systems over a span of nearly two years. Once completed, the carrier is expected to be inducted into the fleet within the next five years.

The People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) has emerged as the world's largest navy, boasting over 370 battleships, surpassing the US Navy in sheer numbers. The Fujian carrier, weighing approximately 79,000 tons, is equipped with the cutting-edge Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS), enhancing its operational capabilities.
Unlike its predecessors, which utilize the ski-jump system, the Fujian carrier adopts the advanced CATOBAR (Catapult Assisted Take-Off But Arrested Recovery) configuration, offering smoother and more efficient aircraft launch capabilities. This system allows heavier fighter jets to take off, providing greater flexibility and firepower.
China's naval modernization efforts signify a strategic shift towards establishing itself as a formidable maritime power capable of conducting operations far beyond its shores. This development holds significant implications for regional security dynamics, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region, where China's assertive naval posture has raised concerns among neighboring countries, including India.
In response, India is also advancing its naval capabilities, with plans for the indigenous aircraft carrier-2 (IAC-2) underway, aiming to bolster its maritime presence and strategic influence in the region. As China's naval expansion continues, the balance of power in the Indo-Pacific remains a critical concern for regional stability and security.
