Beijing issued a cautionary statement regarding the impending US House vote on a TikTok ban, asserting that such actions would have adverse consequences for the United States. The House is scheduled to decide on a bill that would compel TikTok to sever ties with its Chinese parent company or face prohibition in the US.
The proposed legislation represents the most significant threat yet to TikTok, a globally popular video-sharing platform that has sparked concerns among various governments and security agencies due to its Chinese ownership and potential alignment with Beijing's Communist Party.
Ahead of the vote, Wang Wenbin, spokesperson for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, criticized the proposed ban. He highlighted that despite the absence of evidence implicating TikTok in US national security threats, the US persisted in its efforts to suppress the platform. Wang characterized these actions as bullying tactics that disrupt normal business operations, undermine international investor confidence, and disrupt the global economic and trade order.
Wang warned that the repercussions of such actions would ultimately rebound on the United States itself.
The House vote is anticipated to take place at 10:00 am (1400 GMT) and is expected to receive overwhelming support, reflecting a rare moment of bipartisan consensus in the politically polarized atmosphere of Washington.
However, the fate of the bill remains uncertain in the Senate, where influential figures oppose such drastic measures against a widely popular app boasting 170 million users in the US.
The White House has indicated that President Joe Biden would sign the bill, officially titled the "Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act," into law if it reaches his desk.
TikTok has vehemently denied any connections to the Chinese government and has restructured its operations to ensure that the data of US users remains within the country.
TikTok's CEO, Shou Zi Chew, is actively lobbying in Washington to garner support to thwart the bill's passage.
In response, Michael Beckerman, TikTok's Vice President for Public Policy, expressed grave concerns over the rushed legislative process, emphasizing serious constitutional issues. Beckerman highlighted the lack of a public hearing and the unprecedented speed at which the bill is being pushed through.
