In a remarkable turn of fortune, a 28-year-old small business owner from Guizhou, China, has secured an extraordinary lottery win of 680 million yuan, equivalent to $96 million. This historic jackpot, reported by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), now stands as the largest ever recorded in the country.
The winner, maintaining anonymity, consistently bet on a specific set of seven numbers, a strategy that ultimately yielded him a significant windfall. His method involved purchasing 133 lottery tickets, each priced at 28 cents, and remarkably, each ticket won a prize of $725,000. The substantial total prize of $96 million far surpassed China's prior record of $80 million, won by an individual residing in Beijing in 2012.
Following the win, the fortunate businessman received a notification about his substantial victory on his mobile phone during the night. Overwhelmed with disbelief, he verified the win multiple times, unable to contain his excitement and stating, "I was too thrilled to sleep." Promptly, he drove to Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou province, to collect his prize-winning cheque early the next morning.
Reflecting on his winning strategy, the man revealed that he had meticulously researched the numbers appearing in previous winning tickets. He selected some of these numbers and added one of his own lucky numbers to create a set to consistently bet on. Expressing his joy, he announced plans to share this good news with his family during the upcoming Spring Festival holiday.
In contrast, a peculiar incident from December involved another lottery winner from Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region. Despite winning a substantial $30 million, the man chose not to inform his wife or children about the windfall. Identified as Li, he purchased 40 lottery tickets for 80 yuan ($11), each containing the same seven numbers. Upon winning the grand prize, he decided to keep the news from his family, fearing that they might become complacent and not work or study hard in the future. Li even donated 5 million yuan ($684,992) to charity after collecting his prize on October 24.
