Beijing: Allegations have surfaced regarding China's crackdown on political dissent extending beyond its borders, particularly targeting citizens studying abroad, as revealed by rights group Amnesty International on Monday. This comes amidst longstanding concerns over China's stringent measures to stifle domestic protests and activism, employing a combination of sophisticated technological surveillance and intimidation tactics.
According to Amnesty International's report, titled "transnational repression", China's efforts to curb political activism have now extended overseas, posing a significant threat to the freedom of expression and safety of individuals residing in foreign countries. The report draws upon interviews with numerous students studying in eight European and North American nations, shedding light on the intimidation tactics faced by these individuals and their families back in China.

Students recounted instances where their family members in China were subjected to various forms of threats and coercion after their involvement in events abroad, including commemorations of the Tiananmen Square crackdown of 1989. The threats reportedly ranged from passport revocations and job terminations to restrictions on receiving promotions and retirement benefits, or even threats to limit their physical freedom.
Moreover, students disclosed instances of being monitored and censored on Chinese social media platforms, which often serve as their primary means of communication with family members due to China's stringent internet censorship policies. Some students even reported instances where Chinese authorities presented transcripts of their online conversations with family members as a form of intimidation.
The pervasive surveillance and fear of repercussions have compelled many students to engage in self-censorship during academic and social interactions. Additionally, numerous students expressed experiencing mental health issues, ranging from stress and trauma to paranoia and depression, attributed to the constant surveillance and fear of reprisal.
Despite mounting international criticism, China has yet to respond to Amnesty International's report. However, Beijing has consistently maintained that its law enforcement operations, both domestically and abroad, adhere to the principles of sovereignty and legality, refuting allegations of targeting citizens living overseas.
The report underscores the growing concerns over China's expanding efforts to suppress dissent beyond its borders, highlighting the urgent need for international scrutiny and concerted efforts to safeguard the rights and freedoms of individuals affected by such actions.
