BEIJING — China has issued a reassurance to Taiwanese citizens, encouraging them to visit the mainland "without the slightest worry," despite recent tensions over Beijing's judicial actions targeting supporters of Taiwanese independence. This statement comes in response to Taiwan's decision to raise its travel alert level for China following the publication of new judicial guidelines that include severe penalties, such as the death penalty, for advocates deemed to be promoting independence.
Last week, Beijing introduced these guidelines, specifically targeting what it describes as "diehard" advocates of Taiwanese independence. In reaction, Taiwan's government advised its citizens to avoid unnecessary travel to mainland China and Hong Kong, elevating its travel warning to the second-highest level, designated as "orange."
Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for China's Taiwan Affairs Office, emphasized that the judicial measures are directed solely at a small faction of pro-independence individuals engaged in what Beijing views as malicious activities. She assured that the vast majority of Taiwanese involved in cross-strait exchanges and cooperation need not worry about visiting or leaving mainland China.

Zhu stated, "They can arrive in high spirits and leave fully satisfied with their stay." She reiterated China's stance on Taiwan, which it considers a part of its territory since their split following the Chinese civil war in 1949. Despite advocating for peaceful reunification, Beijing has not ruled out the use of force to assert control over Taiwan.
Tensions have escalated since 2016 when top-level communications between Beijing and Taipei ceased after Tsai Ing-wen of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) became Taiwan's leader. Zhu criticized Tsai's successor, President Lai Ching-te, labeling him a "dangerous separatist" and accusing the DPP of fabricating excuses to sow discord and opposition.
Despite political tensions, many Taiwanese continue to travel to mainland China for work, study, or business opportunities, underscoring the complex interplay between political rhetoric and practical cross-strait interactions.
