Chelsea booked their place in the semi-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Brazilian side Palmeiras on Friday. The match took place as part of the quarter-final stage of the tournament. It was a game full of energy, excitement, and moments of drama that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the final whistle.
Strong Start by Chelsea
Right from the beginning of the match, Chelsea showed that they were determined to win. They kept possession of the ball and made quick passes to control the game. The players worked hard to find gaps in Palmeiras’ defence.

Finally, in the 16th minute, Chelsea’s young star Cole Palmer gave his team the lead. Palmer found himself in a good position inside the penalty box. When he got the ball, he took his time, aimed carefully, and fired a powerful shot into the net. The Palmeiras goalkeeper Weverton could not stop it. This goal gave Chelsea the confidence to continue attacking.
Missed Chances Before Halftime
After scoring the first goal, Chelsea kept attacking. They created many chances but could not finish them properly. Sometimes their shots went wide, and sometimes the Palmeiras defenders blocked them bravely. Despite their strong attacks, Chelsea could not score another goal before halftime. They went into the break leading by just one goal.
Palmeiras Make a Strong Comeback
When the second half started, Palmeiras looked like a completely different team. They came out with great energy and determination. They started to press Chelsea higher up the pitch, trying to win the ball back quickly. Their midfielders and forwards combined well to create chances.
In the 53rd minute, Palmeiras’ teenage winger Estevao scored a brilliant goal to make it 1-1. Estevao is only 17 years old and is considered one of the best young talents in Brazil. He is set to join Chelsea soon. For this goal, he showed his talent and skill. From a very tight angle, he managed to shoot the ball with power and accuracy into the net. Chelsea’s goalkeeper could not do anything to stop it. The Palmeiras fans and players celebrated loudly, knowing they were back in the game.
Chelsea Look for a Winner
After conceding the equaliser, Chelsea looked a little worried. They knew that if they did not win, the match could go into extra time or penalties, which would make it even more difficult. Their coach asked the players to stay calm and stick to their game plan.
Chelsea started attacking again with purpose. They passed the ball around, trying to stretch Palmeiras’ defence and create space for their wingers and strikers. Palmeiras, on the other hand, defended strongly but also tried to counter-attack whenever they got the chance.
Dramatic Own Goal Gives Chelsea the Lead
Finally, in the 83rd minute, Chelsea got lucky. Their right-back Malo Gusto tried to cross the ball into the box from the right side. His cross was not perfect, but it hit Palmeiras defender Bruno Fuchs and changed direction. The ball deflected towards the Palmeiras goal. Goalkeeper Weverton was wrongfooted. He could not adjust his body quickly enough, and the ball bounced off his back and went into the net.
It was counted as an own goal by Weverton because the ball touched him last before going in. Chelsea players were happy, but it was a sad moment for Palmeiras as they had worked hard to equalise earlier. This own goal turned out to be the winning goal of the match.
Final Whistle and Chelsea’s Next Challenge
After taking the lead, Chelsea focused on defending for the remaining seven minutes. Palmeiras tried their best to score another equaliser, but Chelsea’s defence stayed strong. The referee blew the final whistle, and Chelsea won the match 2-1. The Chelsea fans cheered loudly, and the players hugged each other in celebration.
This win means Chelsea will now play against Fluminense, another Brazilian club, in the semi-finals. That match will take place on Tuesday in East Rutherford, New Jersey, near New York. It is expected to be an exciting semi-final clash as both teams have strong players and are determined to win the Club World Cup title.
Fluminense Also Reach Semi-Finals
Fluminense reached the semi-finals after beating Al Hilal from Saudi Arabia by the same scoreline of 2-1. Their quarter-final match was played in Orlando.
In that match, Matheus Martinelli scored for Fluminense late in the first half, giving them a 1-0 lead. However, Al Hilal equalised in the second half through their striker Marcos Leonardo, who scored his fourth goal of the tournament. Marcos Leonardo had replaced the injured star striker Aleksandar Mitrovic and performed well throughout the competition.
But Fluminense did not give up. Their substitute Hercules scored his second goal in two games in the second half to give his team the victory. This goal secured their place in the semi-finals and kept Brazilian hopes alive in the Club World Cup.
Al Hilal’s Brave Journey Ends
Al Hilal were the last team from Asia remaining in the tournament. Earlier in the competition, they had created the tournament’s biggest surprise by defeating Manchester City 4-3 in extra time. Even though their journey ended against Fluminense, they earned respect from fans around the world for their fighting spirit and performance.
Looking Ahead
Now, all eyes are on the upcoming semi-final between Chelsea and Fluminense. Chelsea will hope to continue their winning run and reach the final, while Fluminense will aim to prove their strength and bring the Club World Cup trophy back to Brazil.
Football fans worldwide are looking forward to this exciting match, which will showcase top players, brilliant tactics, and the true spirit of world football. Both teams know that they are just one step away from the final and will give everything they have on the pitch.
