A televised mayoral debate in São Paulo, Brazil’s largest city, erupted into chaos when candidate José Luiz Datena, a prominent TV presenter, physically attacked his rival Pablo Marçal with a chair. The confrontation occurred during a live debate on Sunday, marking a dramatic turn in the contentious electoral race.
The incident unfolded after Marçal, a far-right influencer and political newcomer, taunted Datena by challenging him to follow through on a prior threat. Datena had previously hinted at physical retaliation against Marçal in response to allegations Marçal had raised about Datena. These allegations, involving a 2019 sexual harassment complaint by a former coworker of Datena, were withdrawn, but the accuser later alleged intimidation.

During the debate, Datena’s anger boiled over, leading him to grab a chair and strike Marçal on the shoulder. The attack resulted in Datena’s immediate expulsion from the debate venue. Marçal, who sustained a bruised rib, sought medical attention following the assault.
The remaining candidates continued with the debate after Datena's expulsion. Marçal, whose campaign has gained traction due to his provocative debate performances, is currently polling in third place. He trails behind the conservative incumbent Ricardo Nunes and leftist candidate Guilherme Boulos, who are in a tight race, each securing around 25% of voter support, according to Datafolha polls.
In the aftermath of the debate, several pollsters are conducting surveys to assess the impact of the dramatic incident on the election. Political consultancy Eurasia suggests that the altercation is unlikely to shift the dynamics of the race significantly. However, some analysts believe the incident could inadvertently benefit Datena by increasing his visibility. Andre Cesar from Hold Assessoria Legislativa commented, "Most voters had no idea who Datena was before this, but now he's in the spotlight. It could potentially boost his campaign."
As São Paulo prepares for the election on October 6, the fallout from the debate continues to generate headlines, with political observers closely monitoring the effect of this high-profile disruption on the electoral landscape.
