Convicted Canadian serial killer Robert Pickton, 74, died on Friday following an assault by another inmate in a maximum-security prison earlier this month, prison authorities confirmed. Pickton, one of Canada’s most notorious mass murderers, was serving a life sentence for the brutal killings of six women, whose partial remains were discovered on his dilapidated property near Vancouver.
Government prosecutors initially charged Pickton with the murders of 26 women but dropped charges for an additional 20 murders after his conviction. The case has had a profound impact on communities in British Columbia and across Canada, highlighting the plight of missing women, many of whom were from vulnerable populations.
Pickton's crimes were uncovered in early 2002 when police found the remains or DNA of 33 women on his pig farm in Port Coquitlam, about 25 kilometers east of Vancouver. Many of his victims were drug addicts and sex workers from Vancouver's impoverished Downtown Eastside neighborhood, an area plagued by drug abuse and violence. The disappearances spanned over a decade, creating fear and despair within the community.

On May 19, Pickton was assaulted in the Quebec prison where he was incarcerated. Following the attack, he was transported to a hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries. Canada’s correctional service issued a statement acknowledging the significant impact of Pickton’s crimes on communities, particularly in British Columbia.
In 2016, a book purportedly written by Pickton was briefly listed for sale on Amazon, causing outrage. The book, in which Pickton claimed innocence and accused the police of framing him, was swiftly pulled from the platform following a backlash. The publisher apologized to the victims’ families for any distress caused by the book's publication.
Pickton's death marks the end of a grim chapter in Canadian criminal history, but the legacy of his crimes continues to resonate, underscoring the need for greater protection and support for vulnerable communities. The case also serves as a reminder of the ongoing issues surrounding the treatment and safety of marginalized groups in society.
