India has firmly rejected the allegations made by Canadian authorities attempting to connect Indian agents with criminal gangs operating in Canada. This denial comes as tensions escalate between the two nations, primarily following Canada’s unfounded claims that Indian government agents were involved in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a pro-Khalistan activist deemed a terrorist in India.
In light of these developments, RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme has publicly urged members of Canada’s Sikh community to provide information related to ongoing investigations. During an interview with Radio-Canada, Duheme stated, "If people come forward, we can help them, and I ask them to come forward if they can." He emphasized that it is the responsibility of law enforcement to ensure that all residents feel safe in Canada, a sentiment underscored by the broader context of the diplomatic rift.
The diplomatic crisis ignited when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Indian agents of being involved in Nijjar’s June 2022 murder. India has vehemently denied these allegations, calling them “unsubstantiated” and accusing Trudeau of engaging in “vote-bank politics,” especially with elections approaching in Canada.

During a recent press conference, Duheme alleged that there were links between Indian diplomats and organized criminal gangs in Canada, notably the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, which he claimed has been involved in various violent acts, including homicides and extortion. The RCMP has charged eight individuals with homicide and 22 others with extortion connected to these investigations. However, there has been no direct evidence made public linking the Indian government to the murder of Nijjar.
Assistant Commissioner Brigitte Gauvin noted that since September 2023, 13 Canadians have received warnings that they could be targets of harassment or threats from individuals believed to be connected to Indian agents.
In response to the Canadian claims, India has condemned the allegations as politically motivated. Sources within the Indian government have asserted that Canadian authorities have not presented any evidence linking India to the Nijjar case. Furthermore, India criticized Trudeau's approach to the issue, accusing him of pandering to pro-Khalistan groups while leveraging the diplomatic conflict for his own political advantage.
The repercussions of this ongoing dispute have led to significant diplomatic actions. India expelled six Canadian diplomats, including the Canadian High Commissioner to India, and reduced its diplomatic representation in Canada. These diplomats are expected to depart from India by the weekend, and India has also announced the withdrawal of its own High Commissioner from Ottawa.
Despite the serious nature of the allegations, the RCMP has not publicly disclosed concrete evidence to substantiate its claims against Indian officials. Nonetheless, the police force maintains that its investigation is active and continues to gather relevant information. The situation remains fluid, with both countries navigating the complexities of international diplomacy amid rising tensions.
