During Ramadan, adjustments in office and school timings aim to accommodate fasting individuals, impacting traffic patterns on UAE roads. A study conducted by a Dubai-based insurance company revealed crucial insights into road safety during this holy month. Analyzing 1,320 motor insurance claims from the previous year's Ramadan period, Tokio Marine and RoadSafetyUAE highlighted specific trends and risks to raise awareness among road users.
The study pinpointed the peak accident time between 1 pm and 4 pm, constituting 35 percent of road accidents during Ramadan, with the late morning rush hour following closely at 21 percent. Wednesdays emerged as the most accident-prone weekdays, contrasting with safer weekends. Notably, motorists aged 30-39 and 40-49 were identified as the most vulnerable groups.
Ramadan poses unique challenges to road safety due to lifestyle changes associated with fasting. Dehydration and low blood sugar levels can impair drivers' attentiveness and reaction times, exacerbated by irregular meal timings and sleep patterns leading to fatigue and distraction. In light of these risks, road users are urged to exercise caution and defensive driving practices.
Takako Matsuo, a senior manager at Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co., emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety on the roads during Ramadan, recognizing the heightened vulnerabilities faced by motorists. Similarly, Thomas Edelmann, founder of RoadSafetyUAE, underscored the need for vigilance and proactive measures to mitigate risks associated with increased traffic and altered driving conditions.
RoadSafetyUAE provided practical tips for road safety during Ramadan, including awareness of personal limitations, defensive driving, planning for delays, and prioritizing rest and hydration. Additionally, the organization advised against driving during late morning rush hours and recommended using public transport or taxis when possible.
Overall, the study serves as a valuable resource for enhancing road safety awareness and promoting responsible driving behaviors during Ramadan. By understanding the unique challenges posed by fasting and adjusting driving habits accordingly, road users can contribute to a safer and more secure transportation environment for all during this holy month.
