Brazilian Police Alleges Bolsonaro Embezzled $1.2 Million in Saudi Jewelry

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is facing serious legal challenges following his indictment last week on charges of embezzlement, asset laundering, and criminal association. According to Brazil’s Federal Police, Bolsonaro stands accused of embezzling luxury jewelry valued at 6.8 million Brazilian reals (about $1.2 million) during his presidency from 2019 to 2022. This includes high-end items such as diamond-encrusted Rolex and Patek Philippe watches, a necklace, rings, and cufflinks, allegedly received as valuable gifts during international trips. Some of these gifts were purportedly given to government staffers on Bolsonaro’s behalf.

The investigation, which was unsealed by Brazil’s Supreme Court, alleges that Bolsonaro was part of a criminal association aimed at embezzling these valuable items. These gifts, had they been retained by the state, would have been tax-exempt but were allegedly sold illegally, benefiting Bolsonaro’s family. The report further claims that Bolsonaro incorporated these funds outside of Brazil’s banking system to obscure their origins.

This indictment adds to Bolsonaro’s legal woes, which also include accusations of falsifying his COVID-19 vaccination certificate and potential involvement in inciting a January 2023 uprising in Brasilia. As a result of these legal proceedings, Bolsonaro has been stripped of his political rights until 2030. Despite the mounting allegations, Bolsonaro and his legal team have consistently denied any wrongdoing.

The police report identifies 10 additional individuals, including two of Bolsonaro’s lawyers, a retired army general, and a former energy minister from his administration, implicating them in the alleged scheme. Brazil’s prosecutor-general, Paulo Gonet, will now review the comprehensive police report to determine whether to pursue charges against the former president.
