Sao Paulo — A suspected case of mpox identified at São Paulo’s main international airport is likely to be chickenpox, according to the Emilio Ribas Infectious Disease Hospital. The hospital reported on Monday that laboratory tests should confirm the diagnosis within the coming days.
The case in question involved a passenger who had been in a designated area of São Paulo’s Guarulhos Airport set aside for individuals seeking refugee status. The health and sanitation regulator Anvisa had previously noted that the passenger exhibited "signs and symptoms compatible with mpox."
The World Health Organization (WHO) recently declared mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years, citing the rapid spread of a new variant in Africa as the primary concern. This declaration underscores the heightened global alert surrounding mpox.
Brazil’s health ministry has reported over 700 confirmed or probable cases of mpox within the country this year. However, none of these cases have been linked to the newly identified variant. Anvisa has stated that no additional suspected cases have been detected at the airport.

Emilio Ribas clarified that the patient in question did not originate from regions known to be endemic to mpox, though specifics about the passenger’s travel history or country of origin were not disclosed.
The situation at Guarulhos Airport also highlights ongoing concerns regarding the health and human rights of migrants. As of Friday, over 650 migrants from countries such as India, Nepal, and Vietnam were awaiting entry into Brazil, with allegations of deteriorating conditions and human rights violations reported by the public defender’s office.
In response to the situation, Brazil has announced plans to tighten entry regulations to manage the influx of foreigners using Brazil as a transit point to reach the United States and Canada.
