BRASILIA: Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has canceled his trip to Russia for the upcoming BRICS summit, following medical advice to temporarily avoid long-distance flights after suffering a head injury. The incident, which occurred at his residence, resulted in a minor brain hemorrhage. Lula, aged 78, will now participate in the summit via videoconference, instead of traveling as originally planned. He was scheduled to depart on Sunday at 5 p.m.
The president’s physician explained that Lula sustained a significant trauma to the back of his head, which required stitches and led to a small brain hemorrhage in the temporal-frontal region. The doctor emphasized the importance of continued monitoring, stating that “any brain hemorrhage, even a minor one, can theoretically worsen in the following days, so close observation is crucial.” Despite the seriousness of the injury, Lula is otherwise doing well and can continue his regular activities, except for avoiding long flights.
The incident occurred on Saturday, and a medical report issued by the Sirio Libanes Hospital in Brasilia confirmed that the president had suffered a laceration to the occipital region, located at the back of his head. While Lula has been advised to avoid long-haul air travel, the report noted that he is otherwise fit to carry out his duties.

In response to the situation, Brazil’s government announced that Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira will lead the Brazilian delegation at the BRICS summit, which will be held in Russia. Vieira is expected to depart later on Sunday. The BRICS forum, which was established 15 years ago by emerging markets Brazil, Russia, India, and China, has recently expanded to include South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.
Congresswoman Gleisi Hoffmann, president of Lula’s Workers Party, reassured the public in a social media post, stating that she had spoken with the president and that he is in good health but is following medical advice to avoid the long journey to Russia.
The BRICS summit will continue as planned with Lula’s participation via videoconference, ensuring Brazil's presence and input in discussions regarding global economic and geopolitical matters. The event remains a key platform for the emerging economies involved to discuss collaboration and strategies for economic growth, development, and cooperation on the global stage.
