DHAKA — Two crude bombs detonated near Dhaka airport on Thursday night, heightening security concerns as Bangladesh braces for Monday’s verdict in a high-profile domestic war crimes case against ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
No casualties were reported in the explosions, but the blasts intensified anxiety in a capital already tense after days of political unrest and sporadic violence. Authorities quickly cordoned off the area and launched investigations to identify the perpetrators.
Hasina, 78, is currently being tried in absentia on charges of crimes against humanity related to a violent crackdown on student protests in mid-2024. She fled to India following her ouster in August last year and remains there as the trial progresses.
The bombings come at a sensitive time in Bangladesh, where political tensions have been running high following mass protests and confrontations between supporters of the former government and security forces. Analysts warn that any escalation ahead of the verdict could trigger further unrest in the capital and surrounding regions.
Security forces have increased patrols in Dhaka and tightened measures around key government buildings, airports, and transportation hubs to prevent further incidents. Officials are urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
While the motive behind the attacks has not been confirmed, experts suggest the bombings may be linked to political factions attempting to influence public sentiment ahead of the court’s decision. The upcoming verdict in Hasina’s trial is expected to have significant political ramifications for Bangladesh.
As the country awaits Monday’s ruling, authorities face the challenge of maintaining order and preventing violence from spreading amid an already fragile political climate.
