Federal aviation authorities in New York are investigating allegations made by a Boeing engineer regarding safety concerns surrounding the assembly of the 787 Dreamliner planes. The engineer, Sam Salehpour, claims that assembly defects on the Dreamliner pose safety threats and accuses Boeing of prioritizing profit over safety. Salehpour alleges that after raising concerns, he was involuntarily transferred to the 777 program and subsequently threatened with termination when he continued to raise issues there.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has confirmed the investigation following the claims outlined in a New York Times article. Salehpour's attorneys, Debra Katz and Lisa Banks, assert that Boeing ignored Salehpour's warnings about critical defects on nearly 1,500 Boeing planes. In response, Boeing has defended the Dreamliner's safety and denied allegations of retaliation against Salehpour. The Senate has scheduled a hearing to examine Boeing's safety culture in light of firsthand accounts, and the FAA emphasizes the importance of voluntary reporting without fear of reprisal. Salehpour has raised concerns about assembly shortcuts leading to potentially unsafe conditions for the aircraft, echoing previous safety issues faced by Boeing.

Boeing maintains that the issues raised by Salehpour have been thoroughly examined under FAA oversight, and it denies any wrongdoing. The manufacturer assures that measures have been taken to address production issues and maintain the safety and durability of the Dreamliner fleet. The whistleblower allegations come amidst ongoing scrutiny of Boeing's safety practices, including a recent emergency landing of an Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9. Boeing's MAX production output has been frozen by the FAA, and the company faces pressure to demonstrate improvements in operations and quality control. The first quarter saw a significant decline in Boeing's plane deliveries, reflecting the impact of production halts and heightened safety measures. Despite these challenges, Boeing remains committed to addressing safety concerns and ensuring the reliability of its aircraft.
