Bobi's Reign Ends: Oldest Dog Ever Title Revoked After Investigation

Bobi, a Portuguese Mastiff, initially celebrated as the world's oldest dog by Guinness World Records (GWR), has now been stripped of the title following an investigation. GWR awarded the title in February, claiming Bobi to be 31 years and 165 days old at the time, but the recognition was rescinded after discrepancies in evidence of Bobi's age emerged. The canine passed away in October 2023, eight months after receiving the accolade. The investigation was prompted by concerns raised by veterinarians and other experts, noting differences in the appearance of Bobi's paws in early and later photos.

Mark McKinley, GWR's Director of Records, acknowledged the importance of accuracy and integrity in record titles. Despite efforts to verify Bobi's age using microchip data and veterinary input, no conclusive evidence was found. McKinley stated that without such evidence, GWR couldn't retain Bobi as the record holder and maintain the high standards they set. The statement emphasized the organization's commitment to upholding credibility. Bobi's owner was notified of the decision, marking the end of Bobi's reign as the "Oldest Dog Ever" in the Guinness World Records. The incident underscores the challenges of accurately determining the age of pets and the diligence required in validating such records
