As Microsoft celebrates its 50th anniversary, co-founder Bill Gates shared some old photos from the early days of the company. The pictures gave a fun look at how things were when Microsoft was just starting out.

Bill Gates, who was the CEO of Microsoft until the year 2000, posted a short video on his Instagram account. The reel begins with him sitting on a couch, taking a selfie. A message in the video says, "Unfortunately, I'll never feel cool again because this was me in the early Microsoft days."

In his caption, Gates wrote, "Happy 50th birthday, @microsoft. Thanks for the memories—and awkward photo shoots." The video included rare pictures of a young Bill Gates, giving fans a peek into the past.

Who is Bill Gates?

Bill Gates, whose full name is William Henry Gates III, was born in 1955 in Seattle, USA. He started learning how to write computer programs when he was just 13 years old.

He later joined Harvard University but left in his third year to start Microsoft along with his childhood friend Paul Allen. The two of them created an early computer system called MS-DOS, which later became what we now know as Windows. It became the most used software in offices all around the world.

Gates became known as a smart and tough leader. Some people criticized him, saying he used Microsoft's power in ways that weren’t fair to other companies. In the late 1990s, the U.S. government won a legal case against Microsoft for this.

In 2000, Gates stepped down as CEO and handed over the role to Steve Ballmer, who was also his friend from Harvard. After that, Gates focused more on helping people through the charitable foundation he started with his then-wife, Melinda.

In 2020, he resigned from Microsoft’s board of directors. Around that time, it was revealed that he had once been in a relationship with an employee in the past.

What is Microsoft?

Microsoft was started in 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen. Today, it is one of the biggest technology companies in the world, along with others like Apple, Google, Amazon, and Meta.

Over the last 50 years, Microsoft has been shaped by the work of many people, including Bill Gates, Paul Allen, Steve Ballmer, and its current CEO, Satya Nadella.

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Microsoft has added special pages to its website. These pages show how the company has grown over the years, the important moments in its history, and the new things it has created. Microsoft also shared its hopes and plans for the next 50 years, saying it will continue to create useful and lasting innovations for people around the world.
