Washington, D.C. — On Friday, U.S. President Joe Biden spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and announced a new military aid package valued at $125 million. This announcement came as Ukraine prepares to celebrate its Independence Day on Saturday.
In a call with Zelenskyy, Biden reaffirmed the United States' steadfast support for Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia. The aid package includes air-defense missiles, counter-drone equipment, anti-armor missiles, and ammunition, according to a statement from the White House. U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who also spoke with Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov on the same day, confirmed the details of the aid.
The new assistance is intended to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities, particularly in air defense, which Zelenskyy emphasized as crucial for protecting cities, communities, and critical infrastructure from ongoing Russian attacks. The aid comes as Ukraine marks its Independence Day, celebrating its sovereignty amid continued conflict.
Since Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and subsequent full-scale invasion in February 2022, the United States has provided substantial support to Ukraine. This includes more than $50 billion in military aid and various sanctions imposed on Moscow. The recent escalation of the conflict saw Ukraine's military operations extend into Russia's Kursk region, with Ukraine reporting significant battlefield successes despite continued Russian advances in eastern Ukraine.
Additionally, on Friday, the U.S. imposed sanctions on over 400 entities and individuals linked to Russia's war efforts. This includes Chinese companies suspected of aiding Moscow in evading Western sanctions and bolstering its military operations.
The U.S. support underscores its ongoing commitment to Ukraine, amidst a complex and evolving geopolitical landscape.
