Washington: US President Joe Biden announced on Saturday that Israeli-American Hersh Goldberg-Polin was among six hostages recovered from a tunnel in Gaza by Israeli forces. The discovery was made earlier in the day in Rafah, a city in southern Gaza.
In a statement, Biden confirmed that the 23-year-old Goldberg-Polin, who was seized during the October 7 attack by Hamas on southern Israel, was one of the victims. "Earlier today, in a tunnel under the city of Rafah, Israeli forces recovered six bodies of hostages held by Hamas," Biden said.
Goldberg-Polin was among the 251 hostages taken during the assault, which resulted in significant casualties. His parents, who had made public appeals for his safe return, spoke at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago last month. On Thursday, they participated in a rally near the Gaza border, expressing their ongoing concern for their son.

Hersh Goldberg-Polin was abducted from the Supernova music festival and had initially taken refuge in a bomb shelter with others. However, the shelter was surrounded and attacked by Hamas militants. A disturbing video released by Hamas showed Goldberg-Polin being loaded onto a truck, with part of his left arm missing, which had been blown off during the attack.
Goldberg-Polin appeared in a proof-of-life video released by Hamas on April 24, where he described the conditions of captivity as "hellish." In the video, he was shown with his left arm amputated below the elbow.
The October 7 assault by Hamas resulted in the deaths of 1,199 people, predominantly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli figures. In retaliation, Israel's military campaign has led to the deaths of at least 40,691 people in Gaza, as reported by the territory's health ministry. The UN rights office has stated that a significant portion of these casualties are women and children.
The situation remains dire, with around 100 hostages still believed to be in captivity, while dozens are presumed dead, according to the Israeli military.
