Biden Faces Growing Threat to Reelection After Post-Debate Crisis

Democratic anxiety is mounting following President Joe Biden's lackluster debate performance against former President Donald Trump, prompting calls from within the party for transparency regarding Biden's health and ability to lead. The concern escalated after Texas Rep. Lloyd Doggett broke ranks to suggest Biden step aside, marking a significant fissure in Democratic support.

During the debate, Biden's remarks and demeanor raised questions about his fitness for office at 81 years old, exacerbated by his comment to donors about nearly falling asleep on stage—a response that seemed out of touch with the gravity of concerns raised.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre attempted to allay fears, attributing Biden's performance to a recent cold and assuring the public of his fitness based on his February physical exam. However, her explanations failed to dispel doubts, with many noting Biden's occasional lapses and seeming incoherence during the debate.

The fallout has left Democratic leaders grappling with the stark reality of Biden's candidacy. Calls for more detailed explanations from the president have intensified, reflecting fears that his current state may not sustain another term. Democratic Sen. Peter Welch emphasized the pivotal role of Biden's performance in the debate, heightening existing concerns about his age and capacity to effectively lead.

In response, Biden plans a critical ABC interview and meetings with Democratic governors to address mounting unease within the party. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear acknowledged Biden's rough debate but affirmed support while urging more transparency about his health.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi echoed concerns about Biden's health, calling it a legitimate question amid the presidential race's intensity. Meanwhile, Democratic leaders like Illinois Rep. Mike Quigley and South Carolina Rep. James Clyburn expressed varying degrees of support for Biden while acknowledging the need for contingency planning.

Despite internal strife, Biden's team remains resolute, with Vice President Kamala Harris asserting solidarity with Biden as the nominee. However, a CNN/SSRS poll revealing public skepticism about Biden's electability underscores the urgency for Biden to reassure voters and unify the party ahead of the 2024 elections.
