Bhutan's Department of Tourism has announced a significant change by eliminating the mandatory requirement for tourists to purchase travel insurance. Initially introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to address unforeseen emergencies, particularly medical expenses related to the pandemic, this requirement is now being lifted as the situation improves. The decision aims to facilitate smoother travel experiences for visitors to the country.
While the mandatory travel insurance requirement has been removed for visa processing, the department still recommends that tourists obtain travel insurance as a precautionary measure. This ensures they are adequately covered in case of any unlikely emergencies associated with international travel. By removing this requirement, Bhutan seeks to streamline the visa application process and encourage more visitors to explore its unique culture, landscapes, and heritage.

This adjustment reflects Bhutan's commitment to providing a welcoming and hassle-free experience for tourists while maintaining necessary precautions for their safety and well-being. It aligns with the country's efforts to promote tourism and enhance its reputation as a tourist-friendly destination.
Regarding visa requirements for Indian passport holders, Bhutan maintains visa-free travel for Indian citizens due to strong diplomatic ties between the two countries. However, Indian travelers must obtain an entry permit from the Immigration Office in Phuentsholing, valid for a period of 7 days for those entering by road. Extensions beyond the initial 7 days can be applied for at the immigration office in Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, ensuring compliance with immigration regulations and a hassle-free stay for visitors.
The entry permit issued by the Bhutan Immigration Department for Indian citizens is provided at no charge, further facilitating travel and promoting cultural exchange between Bhutan and India.
