A beachgoer was rescued 80 kilometers (50 miles) out to sea after drifting for 36 hours on a floating ring off Japan’s east coast, authorities reported. The woman, in her 20s and from China, was located by two tanker crew members who jumped into the water to assist her as she floated near a peninsula south of Tokyo on Wednesday morning, according to the Japan Coast Guard.

Earlier, a cargo ship's crew spotted her and alerted the tanker for help. After her rescue, she was airlifted by helicopter to Yokohama, where she was taken to a hospital for evaluation following her lengthy ordeal.

The coast guard reported that she was dehydrated but conscious and not in life-threatening condition, stating there was no need for hospitalization.

The search for the woman began after she was reported missing from a beach in Shimoda city, Shizuoka prefecture, around 7:30 p.m. on Monday, as noted by Japan’s public broadcaster NHK. Approximately 30 minutes after entering the water, she realized she was drifting and was unable to swim back to shore.

Authorities indicated that strong currents and moderately strong winds likely swept her away from the beach.

Japan, with over 6,000 islands, boasts some of Asia’s most stunning beaches, attracting tourists seeking relief from the summer heat. However, not every beach day is without incident. In 2019, the Japan Coast Guard reported over 500 rescues due to beach-related accidents.
