The relentless monsoon rains in Bangladesh have caused severe flooding that has displaced nearly three million people and claimed two lives. The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) has issued a warning that water levels are expected to rise further over the next 24 hours, raising concerns about worsening conditions and additional displacement.
The flooding has submerged large areas of the country, damaging homes and infrastructure. Residents in affected regions, such as Feni, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Comilla, and Chittagong, have been forced to evacuate their homes, with many relying on boats and makeshift transportation as knee-deep water floods their properties. Road connectivity in several regions has been severed, isolating communities and complicating relief efforts.
Mohammad Masum, a resident of Feni district, described the situation as unprecedented, saying, "I haven't seen so much water in the last 20 years. Everything in my house is wrecked because the water has risen to waist level." The FFWC reports that five major rivers in the affected districts are flowing above danger levels.

An analysis conducted by the World Bank Institute in 2015 estimated that 3.5 million people in Bangladesh are at risk of annual river flooding. Climate change is believed to be exacerbating such catastrophic events, with scientists attributing the increased severity to changing weather patterns.
In Dhaka, students protested late Wednesday, accusing India of contributing to the floods by opening sluice gates at the Dumbur dam on the Gumti River in Tripura. India's foreign ministry countered these claims, stating that the floods are primarily due to heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of the Gumti River, which flows through both India and Bangladesh. The ministry emphasized that the flooding in Bangladesh is a result of heavy rains in these catchments, not solely due to dam operations.
In Tripura, India, the incessant rain has also caused flooding and landslides, resulting in the deaths of 12 people. Suman Deb, an Indian disaster management official, reported that rescue operations are ongoing to address the devastation. Indian Interior Minister Amit Shah has announced that disaster management teams, boats, and helicopters have been deployed to assist in relief efforts in Tripura.
India's foreign ministry has highlighted the shared nature of the flood problem, emphasizing the need for close cooperation between India and Bangladesh to address the impacts on both sides of the border.
