Bangladesh Elections Delayed as Muhammad Yunus Focuses on Major Reforms

New Delhi: Muhammad Yunus, Nobel laureate and Chief Adviser to Bangladesh's interim government, addressed diplomats in Dhaka on Sunday, emphasizing the need for extensive reforms before proceeding with the next general elections. This address marked Yunus' initial engagement with the international diplomatic community since assuming office on August 8, following the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Yunus stepped into his role amidst a turbulent political environment that saw widespread protests and violence leading to Hasina's ousting. In his speech, Yunus outlined the interim government’s strategy for stabilizing and democratizing Bangladesh, which includes conducting a free, fair, and inclusive election once essential reforms in the election commission, judiciary, civil administration, security forces, and media are completed.

Restoring Normalcy

On August 5, Sheikh Hasina, aged 76, fled Bangladesh by helicopter to India as protesters overwhelmed Dhaka's streets. Her 15-year tenure was marred by accusations of human rights violations and ended in dramatic fashion. The unrest leading up to her departure resulted in over 450 deaths and numerous attacks on Bangladesh's Hindu minority community.

Yunus stressed that restoring law and order is a top priority for his administration. He expressed confidence that normalcy would soon be restored with the support of the populace and the patriotic armed forces. "Our primary goal is to regain control over the law and order situation. The armed forces will continue their support as long as necessary," Yunus stated.

Economic Revival

In addition to political reform, Yunus highlighted the necessity for economic restructuring. He criticized Hasina’s administration for its alleged corruption and mismanagement. "We will implement significant economic reforms to restore macroeconomic stability and ensure sustainable growth," he said.

Yunus accused the former regime of systematically dismantling Bangladesh’s institutions over the past 15 years, claiming that elections were manipulated and democratic rights were suppressed. He described the recent civil unrest as a "Second Revolution," driven by students and citizens seeking to reclaim their democratic rights.

International Support

Yunus appealed to the international community for continued support in rebuilding Bangladesh and transitioning towards a functional democracy. He assured diplomats that Bangladesh would uphold its commitment to multilateralism, with the United Nations playing a central role in its foreign policy.

"We believe our international friends and partners will support our government and people as we embark on a new democratic journey," Yunus said. "Bangladesh is at a pivotal moment. Our courageous students and citizens deserve a meaningful transformation. It is a challenging path, and we need global assistance to fulfill their aspirations as soon as possible."

Yunus also welcomed the United Nations' decision to send a fact-finding mission to investigate the recent violence, showing commitment to transparency and accountability in the face of ongoing challenges.
