Baltimore Bridge Collapse: 7 Rescued

A distressing video footage captured a harrowing event as the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore suffered partial collapse after being struck by a container ship in the early hours of Tuesday, March 26, at approximately 1:30 am.

Spanning a length of 3 kilometers, the Francis Scott Key Bridge serves as a crucial segment of the I-95 interstate, a vital artery connecting the southern and northern regions of the US East Coast, from Miami, Florida to Maine.

The collision with the container ship caused a catastrophic failure of the bridge, resulting in its collapse into the waters of the Patapsco River below. In response to the incident, authorities swiftly closed all lanes in both directions of the bridge, redirecting traffic to alternative routes.

Emergency services, including the Coast Guard and the fire department, promptly declared the situation a mass casualty incident. Chief Kevin Cartwright, spokesperson for the Baltimore City Fire Department, confirmed to BBC news that the collapse had resulted in "seven individuals and several vehicles" plunging into the river, prompting an urgent and coordinated multi-agency rescue operation.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, upon being notified of the incident, immediately initiated response protocols and pledged his full cooperation with local authorities. He assured the public that emergency personnel were mobilized and actively engaged in rescue efforts at the scene.

As of the latest reports, there have been no confirmed casualties associated with the collapse. However, concerns lingered as Baltimore city police indicated the likelihood of workers being caught in the water following the bridge's failure.

Baltimore County executive, Johnny Olszewski Jr., issued a statement acknowledging the gravity of the situation and emphasized the ongoing rescue efforts. He sought solace in collective prayers for the safety and well-being of those impacted by the tragic event.
