Kathmandu — Autopsies are currently being conducted on the 27 Indian pilgrims who tragically lost their lives in a bus accident in Nepal. The incident occurred on Friday when their bus veered off the highway and plunged into a fast-flowing river in the Bagmati province.

The pilgrims, all from Maharashtra, were on a 10-day tour of Nepal. The post-mortem examinations are taking place at Bharatpur Hospital in Chitwan district, according to Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, spokesperson for Nepal's Home Ministry. Once completed, the bodies will be repatriated to India. An Indian Air Force plane is scheduled to transport the remains to Nashik later today.

The accident, which occurred in the Aanbu Khaireni area of Tanahun district, involved a bus traveling from Pokhara to Kathmandu. The vehicle, carrying 43 passengers including the driver and two assistants, fell approximately 150 meters into the Marsyangdi River after going off the road. Sixteen people were killed at the scene, while 11 others died later from their injuries.

Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Raksha Nikhil Khadse, has arrived in Kathmandu to oversee the process of returning the victims and to support the injured. Khadse, along with Nepal’s Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, visited the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu where the 16 injured passengers are being treated.

The injured include a mix of severe and less critical cases, with one individual in the intensive care unit and others receiving treatment in general wards and private cabins. Khadse praised the prompt response from Nepalese authorities and the Indian embassy for their coordination in the aftermath of the crash.

Nepal’s Home Minister, Ramesh Lekhak, commended the efforts of security personnel from the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force who were involved in the rescue operations. He indicated that decisions regarding further treatment or referral to India for critical cases would be made based on medical consultations.

Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli expressed his condolences for the tragic loss, highlighting the depth of the tragedy and extending sympathies to the victims' families. The incident has prompted a significant response from both Indian and Nepalese authorities to ensure the victims' families receive the necessary support.

The bus accident occurred on a national highway, approximately 90 kilometers west of Kathmandu. The cause of the accident remains under investigation, and the bus will be recovered with the help of a crane. The pilgrims were part of a larger group of 104 who had arrived in Nepal two days prior to the accident, having traveled from Maharashtra in three separate buses.

The Indian embassy in Nepal has provided emergency contact numbers for families seeking information and assistance, highlighting their ongoing support for those affected by this devastating accident.
