LUCKNOW, India — A tragic accident unfolded in northern India on Wednesday when a double-decker passenger bus collided with a milk truck, resulting in the deaths of at least 18 individuals and causing numerous injuries, according to officials.
The collision occurred on an expressway in Uttar Pradesh state. Arvind Kumar, a local police officer, reported that 19 injured individuals were swiftly transported to nearby hospitals by villagers, with their conditions currently described as stable. The bus was en route from Bihar, a northern state, to New Delhi, the capital city.

"Authorities are actively working to identify the victims, and an investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the accident," Kumar stated.
Gaurang Rathi, a government official, disclosed from initial findings that the bus may have been traveling at a high speed when it collided with the milk truck from behind. This impact caused both vehicles to overturn, with the bus sustaining such severe damage that one side was torn off, leading to passengers being ejected onto the road. Television images depicted a distressing scene of bodies scattered across the accident site.
India contends with one of the highest rates of road fatalities globally, with hundreds of thousands of deaths and injuries reported annually. The primary factors contributing to these incidents include reckless driving, inadequate road maintenance, and aging vehicles.
In another tragic incident in May, a bus transporting Hindu pilgrims veered off a mountainous highway in Indian-controlled Kashmir, plunging into a deep gorge and claiming the lives of at least 21 people.
