Former Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld says, "If you had asked Liverpool fans back in August if their team would win the Premier League, most of them would have said no."
That’s because Liverpool’s much-loved manager, Jürgen Klopp, had already said he would leave the club at the end of the 2024 season. Klopp wasn’t just a successful manager—he had become a legend at Liverpool. His energy, personality, and big wins made him a hero for fans, and the thought of him leaving made many people nervous.
Fans were worried. Who could replace Klopp? Would Liverpool get worse before getting better again?
Westerveld explained, “Klopp was like a god to Liverpool. He didn’t just change the way the team played. He changed the whole mood and spirit of the club.”

At first, many people thought Xabi Alonso, a former Liverpool player doing great as manager of Bayer Leverkusen, would come back to take over. But Alonso said he wanted to stay in Germany. That opened the door for Arne Slot, a coach from the Netherlands, to become Liverpool’s new manager.
Westerveld, who knows Slot personally from their time playing together at Sparta Rotterdam in 2007–08, said, “At first, I didn’t even think about Arne. Most people in England didn’t know much about him. Everyone who understands football said it would be really hard for him. He was an unknown coach from the Netherlands.”
But surprisingly, the switch from Klopp to Slot went really well.
Now, Liverpool needs just one more point to win the Premier League. That would make them champions of England for the 20th time—a record they would share with Manchester United.
Slot’s Liverpool team has won 24 out of 33 games and only lost two. Since November 2nd, they’ve been on top of the Premier League, ahead of every other team. If they don’t lose against Tottenham this Sunday, they will win the title—with four matches still left to play. That would be only the second time Liverpool has done that since the 1989–90 season.
Slot had also turned down the chance to manage Tottenham last year while he was still at Feyenoord. If Liverpool wins the title, Slot will join a very small group of managers who have won the Premier League in their first season. Only a few others have done it: José Mourinho (2004–05), Carlo Ancelotti (2009–10), Manuel Pellegrini (2013–14), and Antonio Conte (2016–17).
Liverpool Echo’s chief writer Ian Doyle said, “No one thought this would happen. For a manager in his first season at Liverpool, this has to be one of the biggest achievements ever.”
Neil Atkinson, who runs The Anfield Wrap (a Liverpool fan podcast and website), said, “No one wanted Slot to try to copy Klopp. All we wanted was for him to be himself—and that’s exactly what he’s done.”
