Early Monday, Army troops thwarted a significant terrorist attack on a security post in Gundha village, Rajouri district, Jammu and Kashmir, according to officials. The attack occurred around 4 a.m. when terrorists opened fire on the post, leading to intense gunfire exchanges.

The Army's quick response to the assault led to the foiling of the attack. An Army spokesperson confirmed that while the troops successfully repelled the attackers, a soldier was injured and has been transported to a hospital for treatment. Unverified reports suggest that a jawan and a civilian might also have been injured during the incident, though this has not been officially confirmed.
In the wake of the attack, security forces initiated a cordon and search operation in the area to locate the terrorists. The operation is ongoing, with fresh exchanges of fire reported between the terrorists and the security forces. Initial attempts by the terrorists to target the house of a village defense group member and an ex-serviceman on the outskirts of the village were thwarted by the presence of police, leading the attackers to shift their focus to the Army post.
Following the attack, security measures in the region have been heightened, with additional reinforcements deployed to manage the situation. This incident is part of a disturbing trend of increased terrorist activity in Jammu, including recent attacks on army convoys and encounters in Doda and Udhampur. On Thursday, troops had to open fire near the Line of Control in the Sunderbani area of Rajouri following suspicious movements. Additionally, two soldiers were injured in a separate encounter in Kastigarh, Doda, just days after a deadly encounter in Doda claimed the lives of four soldiers, including an officer.
On July 16, Lt Gen MV Suchindra Kumar, Northern Army Commander, honored the four soldiers who died in the Doda encounter. He praised their sacrifice, saying they laid down their lives to bring peace to the region.
To address the rising terrorist threats, about 4,000 additional soldiers have been deployed to Jammu's hilly districts. Elite Para Commandos and mountain warfare-trained troops are now in place to combat the terrorist threat more effectively. A revised security strategy has been adopted to counter the terrorists' hit-and-run tactics, following a series of six attacks since June 9, which resulted in 12 security personnel fatalities across Poonch, Rajouri, Doda, and Kathua districts. These incidents often involved ambushes in densely forested areas.
The increased military presence and proactive measures aim to safeguard the local population and counter the escalating terrorist activities effectively.
