Apple's recent decision to utilize Google's cloud infrastructure for developing its AI software has sparked interest in the tech world. The company opted for Google's tensor processing units (TPUs) instead of the industry-leading AI processors produced by Nvidia, as revealed in a research paper published on Monday.
Apple’s choice is noteworthy because Nvidia, renowned for its powerful graphics processing units (GPUs), holds a dominant position in the AI hardware market. Despite Nvidia's leading role, Apple relied on Google’s TPU chips to build key components of its upcoming AI tools and features. The market for AI processors sees Nvidia commanding around 80% of the share, while companies like Google and Amazon also contribute with their proprietary chips.

The research paper details Apple’s deployment of two versions of Google's TPUs. For its AI models designed to run on iPhones and other devices, Apple utilized 2,048 TPUv5p chips. For server-based AI tasks, the company deployed 8,192 TPUv4 processors. Notably, the paper does not mention any use of Nvidia hardware, though Apple did not explicitly state that Nvidia chips were excluded.
Unlike Nvidia, which focuses on standalone GPUs, Google offers its TPUs through its Google Cloud Platform, requiring customers to develop software through its platform to access the hardware. Apple’s decision to use Google's TPUs for its AI development, instead of Nvidia's offerings, highlights a significant shift in its hardware strategy.
The research paper also suggests that Apple's engineers believe Google's TPUs have the potential to support even larger and more complex AI models beyond the two discussed. This aligns with Apple’s broader strategy to enhance its AI capabilities, a goal recently emphasized during its June developer conference, where the company showcased new AI features and integration of OpenAI's ChatGPT technology into its software suite.
Despite the shift in hardware strategy, Apple’s stock experienced a minor decline of 0.1% to $218.24 on Monday. Google did not respond to requests for comment on this development, and Nvidia also declined to provide a statement. The full extent of Apple's reliance on Google's hardware and its implications for the AI hardware market remain closely watched by industry observers.
