Apple is planning to add a new feature to its AirPods that will allow them to translate conversations in real-time. This feature will let the earbuds translate a conversation from one language to another as it happens, so people can talk to each other even if they don’t speak the same language. This new feature will be part of an AirPods software update that is expected to come later this year. The update will also be linked to iOS 19, the next version of Apple’s mobile operating system.
This idea of live translation isn’t new. Other companies, like Google with its Pixel Buds, have offered this feature for a while. Apple has also had its Translate app on the iPhone since 2020. However, Apple’s new AirPods feature will make the translation process much easier and more seamless, almost like something you’d see in a science fiction movie, like Star Trek. Here’s how it will work: Imagine an English speaker is listening to someone speak in Spanish. The iPhone will automatically translate the Spanish speech into English and send the translated audio to the English speaker’s AirPods. At the same time, the iPhone will translate the English speaker’s words into Spanish and play it back to the other person.

Apple has not commented on the plans yet, but the feature is part of a larger update Apple is planning for its software this year. Apple is working on a big redesign for iOS 19, which will bring new features and improvements. The company is also planning to redesign macOS, which is the operating system for its computers. These updates are meant to make the software fresher and more appealing to a new generation of users. In addition to the new AirPods feature, Apple is also improving its translation technology in iOS 19.
Apple has been improving AirPods over the years by adding new features through software updates, meaning users don’t need to buy new AirPods to get these improvements. For example, last year Apple added hearing health options to the second-generation AirPods Pro, such as hearing aids and testing features that don’t require a doctor’s visit.
Apple is also working on new AirPods hardware, like a third-generation version of the AirPods Pro. They’re even developing a version of AirPods with built-in cameras that can use artificial intelligence to analyze the environment around you. Last year, Apple released new colors for the AirPods Max headphones and introduced a more affordable version of AirPods 4.
Overall, these changes are part of Apple’s plan to keep improving its products and offer even more advanced features to users.
