New Delhi has been abuzz with controversy following Google's recent decision to remove several popular apps developed by ten Indian developers from its Play Store. The reason cited by Google was "non-compliance with billing policies," which has ignited a wave of criticism and raised concerns among various stakeholders in the Indian tech ecosystem.
Among the delisted apps were well-known names in the matrimony sector such as Bharat Matrimony and Telugu Matrimony, along with dating apps like Truly Madly and QuackQuack. Additionally, vernacular video-streaming platform Stage, Balaji Telefilms' Altt, and audio streaming app Kuku FM were also removed from the Play Store.
The move has sparked tensions between local internet firms and the tech giant, prompting strong reactions from key figures in the Indian startup community. Anupam Mittal, the founder of matchmaking app Shaadi.com, expressed his dismay at the removal of significant apps, labeling it a "dark day for India's Internet."
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Mr. Mittal highlighted the ongoing legal proceedings at the Competition Commission of India and the Supreme Court of India, indicating that Google's actions were premature. He accused Google of having little regard for the Indian internet ecosystem and likened the situation to the era of the East India Company, dubbing Google as the "new Digital East India Co."
Vinay Singhal, CEO of the OTT platform STAGE, whose app was delisted, echoed similar sentiments. He criticized Google's monopolistic policies, particularly regarding billing systems within apps, and drew parallels between Google's actions and the historical dominance of the East India Company.
Singhal appealed directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, acknowledging his efforts in building Digital India but highlighting the potential threat posed by what he referred to as "Digital East India Companies" like Google. He emphasized the significant impact on millions of Indian users who would be deprived of their favorite apps due to Google's actions.
Sanjeev Bikhchandani, founder of technology holding company Info Edge, proposed the establishment of India's own mobile app store in response to Google's actions. He advocated for a strategic response and tagged Union Minister Piyush Goyal, emphasizing the need for a Digital Public Infrastructure akin to UPI and ONDC.
Lal Chand Bisu, CEO of Kuku FM, expressed frustration with Google's actions, describing the company as the "most evil" for businesses. He recounted a previous instance in 2019 when Kuku FM was delisted without notice, causing significant disruption to their operations. Facing a similar situation again, Bisu lamented the potential consequences for their business and called for government intervention to safeguard the startup ecosystem.
The uproar comes against the backdrop of Google's overwhelming dominance in India's smartphone market, where it holds over 97% market share. The removal of these apps has raised broader questions about the power dynamics between global tech giants and local players, as well as the need for regulatory oversight to ensure a level playing field for all stakeholders in the Indian tech ecosystem.
