In the lead-up to snap parliamentary elections in France, left-leaning Jewish associations and individual voters are facing a challenging decision amidst rising concerns about anti-Semitism. The far-right National Rally (RN), led by Marine Le Pen, is expected to make significant gains, while the hard-left France Unbowed (LFI) has been criticized for its handling of issues related to anti-Semitism, particularly following Hamas's October 7 attack on Israel.
Golem, a Jewish collective, views the far-right as the primary threat to both Jews and French society, emphasizing the dangers posed by RN. Conversely, concerns about anti-Semitism within LFI have complicated choices for Jewish voters. LFI's ambiguous stance on recent international conflicts and its perceived tolerance of anti-Semitic rhetoric have led to temporary isolation from other left-wing parties.

Three major blocs are competing in the upcoming elections: RN, President Emmanuel Macron's centrist camp, and the New Popular Front (NFP), a left-wing alliance that includes LFI. Criticism has been directed at the Socialist Party (PS) for aligning with LFI, with accusations that LFI exploits anti-Jewish sentiments for electoral gain.
Raphael Glucksmann, a prominent figure in PS, acknowledged the dilemma faced by voters, defending the alliance as necessary to counter the far-right threat, despite acknowledging the difficulties it presents to Jewish constituents. LFI, in response, denies allegations of anti-Semitism and includes measures in its platform to combat hatred towards Jews and Muslims alike.
The recent surge in anti-Semitic incidents in France has further heightened tensions. Incidents such as the assault on a young Jewish girl in a Paris suburb have underscored the ongoing challenges facing the Jewish community. Political figures like Jean-Luc Melenchon, leader of LFI, have been criticized for their handling of issues related to Israel and anti-Semitism, despite condemning hate crimes.
Marine Le Pen has sought to capitalize on these concerns, positioning RN as a defender of Jewish interests and critic of what she describes as the far-left's insufficient support for Jewish communities. Historian Serge Klarsfeld's endorsement of RN over the left alliance has stirred controversy within the Jewish community, highlighting deep divisions over how to address anti-Semitism in French politics.
As the election approaches, Jewish voters find themselves grappling with difficult choices, weighing the perceived anti-Semitism of certain political factions against the broader political landscape. Despite reservations about LFI, some voters lean towards supporting them to prevent RN's electoral success, reflecting the complex dynamics shaping Jewish political engagement in France today.
