American Airlines is facing severe criticism following a lawsuit involving a 9-year-old girl who was secretly filmed in a plane's toilet by a male flight attendant. The airline's response, which included blaming the young victim, has been described as "shameful and outrageous."
The incident came to light when a 14-year-old girl discovered a hidden camera in the plane's bathroom and informed her family. An FBI investigation subsequently revealed other victims, including the 9-year-old from Texas, and uncovered AI-generated pornography on the flight attendant's devices.
Estes Carter Thompson III, a 37-year-old American Airlines flight attendant, was arrested in January for recording four underage girls during multiple flights. The airline has since suspended Thompson.

In the lawsuit filed by the 9-year-old's family, American Airlines' legal team argued that the girl was partly to blame, citing "comparative negligence" and "contributory negligence." They claimed that the harm experienced was the girl's "own fault," arguing that she "should have known" about the recording device in the bathroom.
Caroline Recupero, the plaintiff's lawyer, condemned the airline's defense, calling it both shameful and outrageous. The girl's parents recounted the trauma their daughter has faced since learning about the incident from the FBI.
The complaint detailed how Thompson took pictures of the girl while she was using the bathroom during a flight to Los Angeles. The FBI recovered images from Thompson's iCloud account showing explicit photos of the girl.
The flight attendant had directed a 14-year-old passenger to the first-class bathroom, claiming the regular bathroom was occupied. Inside, the girl found red stickers concealing a hidden iPhone. She photographed the device and informed authorities, leading to the investigation and Thompson's arrest.
Thompson faces charges of attempted sexual exploitation of children and possession of child sexual abuse images. Prosecutors found hundreds of images stored in his iCloud account, many generated through artificial intelligence.
