Italy's antitrust authority has levied a substantial fine of 10 million euros ($10.70 million) against two Amazon subsidiaries for allegedly engaging in unfair commercial practices. The regulator's decision, announced on Wednesday, stems from Amazon's automatic pre-setting of the 'Subscribe&Save' option without explicit consumer consent.
The antitrust authority contends that Amazon's practice of defaulting to the 'Subscribe&Save' option for regular scheduled deliveries, rather than one-off purchases, significantly curtails consumers' freedom of choice. By automatically pre-selecting recurring purchases, Amazon induces consumers to periodically buy products, even when there may not be an immediate need, thereby restricting their ability to make independent purchasing decisions.

In a statement issued by the antitrust authority, they emphasized that the pre-selection of recurring purchases effectively coerces consumers into making periodic purchases, potentially without genuine necessity, thereby impinging upon their freedom of choice.
This move by the Italian regulator signals a proactive stance against what it perceives as unfair commercial practices by large corporations, particularly in the digital marketplace. Amazon, being a major player in e-commerce, is subject to scrutiny and regulatory action to ensure compliance with consumer protection laws and to safeguard consumers' rights.
