Amanda Knox, the American who endured four years behind bars in Italy after being wrongfully convicted for the murder of her roommate, Meredith Kercher, returns to an Italian courtroom in a quest to overturn a slander conviction linked to the high-profile case that captivated the world over a decade ago.

This time, Knox faces a legal battle to reverse a slander verdict related to her false accusation against her former employer, Patrick Lumumba, in connection with Kercher's murder. The tragedy unfolded in Perugia, Italy, where Knox and Kercher resided as students.

The discovery of Kercher's lifeless body, bearing stab wounds to the neck, on November 2, 2007, shocked the tranquil town. Knox, along with her then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, and Lumumba, were initially arrested in connection with the crime, primarily based on Knox's coerced confession during a police interrogation.

Lumumba, hailing from the Democratic Republic of Congo, endured nearly two weeks of wrongful incarceration before being exonerated due to lack of evidence.

Subsequently, Knox, Sollecito, and another suspect, Rudy Guede, were convicted of Kercher's murder in 2009. However, Guede's claim of being present at the scene but not responsible for the killing implicated Knox and Sollecito in the crime.

Legal proceedings saw Knox and Sollecito acquitted in 2011, but their acquittals were later overturned, leading to a second conviction in 2014. However, in 2015, Italy's supreme court definitively cleared Knox and Sollecito of Kercher's murder.

Despite the exoneration from murder charges, Knox remained convicted of slander against Lumumba, a verdict upheld by Italy's supreme court in 2015. She served a three-year prison term for this offense, which she completed before her murder trial.

Knox's fight for justice extended to the European Court of Human Rights, which in 2019 ruled that her rights were violated during the interrogation process, prompting the reopening and eventual overturning of her slander conviction by Italy's supreme court in 2023.

The ongoing trial in Florence, which commenced on April 10, represents Knox's latest legal endeavor to clear her name entirely. Although absent from previous hearings, Knox is expected to testify in this critical session.

Wednesday's proceedings hold significant weight as they unfold in the same courtroom where Knox was previously convicted. A verdict will be reached following deliberations by two judges and eight jurors, with the outcome subject to review by Italy's supreme court.

Regardless of the verdict, Knox faces no further incarceration. Her determination to seek exoneration underscores her unwavering commitment to rectify the injustices she endured.

As the legal saga unfolds, Knox remains active, collaborating on a Hulu series chronicling her tumultuous life journey alongside former White House intern Monica Lewinsky.
