Hilaria Baldwin recently talked about the criticism she faces for her accent. On a new episode of her TLC reality show, The Baldwins, the 41-year-old yoga teacher shared that she often switches between Spanish and American accents. She said this is because of “code-switching,” which means changing the way you speak based on where you are or who you are talking to. Hilaria explained that she does this naturally because of her mixed cultural background. However, this habit has led to people criticizing her ever since she married Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin in 2012.

Hilaria has faced questions about her Spanish heritage for years. In a 2020 podcast, she said she was born in Mallorca, Spain, and raised in Boston. She also claimed she moved to the United States when she was 19. However, social media users later found out that she was actually born and raised in the U.S., not Spain, as reported This made many people angry, with some accusing her of lying about her background. In response, Hilaria shared a post on Instagram. She apologized for the confusion and said she never meant to mislead anyone. She explained that culture, language, and identity are complex and can’t be put into simple boxes.

On the recent episode of her show, Hilaria spoke about how hard it is to deal with the ongoing backlash. She said being in the public eye makes it difficult to avoid mean comments. “When people ask, ‘Don’t you get used to it?’ The answer is no. You don’t get used to people being cruel,” she said. She explained that she tries to ignore the negativity. “You take a deep breath. You learn to step back from it. You try to turn down the noise in your head so it doesn’t hurt as much,” she added.

Hilaria also shared that the constant criticism made her learn about code-switching. She explained that people with mixed cultural roots often change their language, tone, and accent depending on where they are.

“Growing up with different cultures means you never fully fit in anywhere,” she said. “You can try, but it’s hard. You learn to adjust. You become like a chameleon. People who code-switch are good at blending in. You don’t even think about it—it just happens naturally.”

She compared it to how people slow down and speak clearly when talking to someone who can’t hear well. “You change the way you speak without thinking. It’s the same with code-switching,” she explained. “I didn’t know what it was until people started attacking me. I had to learn about it. That’s when I realized—it’s called code-switching,” she added.

Despite the years of public judgment, Hilaria said she has become more comfortable with who she is. She hopes that by sharing her story, she can help others understand how people with mixed cultures naturally change the way they speak without even realizing it.
