Carlos Alcaraz finished the season as the world number one after defeating Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti 6-4, 6-1 at the ATP Finals in Turin. The important win also helped him top the Jimmy Connors Group and confirmed his place in the semifinals. This result also sent Australia’s Alex De Minaur into the last four, as De Minaur had earlier beaten Taylor Fritz. With this win, Alcaraz closed a strong season in the best way possible.
Before the match, Alcaraz admitted he felt nervous because he was playing for the chance to end the year as the best player in the world. He said the pressure was high, but he tried his best to stay calm. Despite a slow start, he found his rhythm, kept his focus, and took full control in the second set. Musetti started strong, but Alcaraz broke his serve at 5-4 in the first set, which changed the direction of the match completely.
Alcaraz has had one of the best seasons of his career. He reached three Grand Slam finals—French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. He won two of them, the French Open and US Open, and only lost the Wimbledon final. In all three finals, he faced Italy’s Jannik Sinner, showing how important their rivalry has become. With eight titles this season, Alcaraz proved he is one of the top players of his generation.
At the Inalpi Arena, the fans showed mixed reactions when both players walked in. Musetti received loud cheers from the Italian crowd, while Alcaraz heard some boos. But once the match began, the crowd appreciated his strong performance and applauded him warmly. Musetti played well in the first set and won two games to love, but once Alcaraz raised his level, the local favourite could not keep up.
After surviving a long game to win the first set, Alcaraz became more confident and aggressive. Musetti could not match his speed and shot-making. The Spaniard broke Musetti twice in the second set and quickly built a 5-1 lead. With consistent play and powerful groundstrokes, Alcaraz sealed the match without difficulty and confirmed his semifinal spot.
Italy’s Jannik Sinner has already qualified for the semifinals as the winner of the Bjorn Borg Group. A possible final between Alcaraz and Sinner would be one of the most exciting matches of the tournament, considering their growing rivalry in big events. Alcaraz said he was excited for the next rounds and hoped to reach the final for the first time at the ATP Finals.
Earlier in the day, Alex De Minaur defeated Taylor Fritz 7-6(3), 6-3. It was a must-win match for De Minaur, and he played aggressively from the start. Fritz struggled with his usual strong serve, giving De Minaur more chances to attack. Even after his win, De Minaur was unsure about the qualification rules and joked that he needed to check before celebrating. Once Alcaraz won, De Minaur secured a semifinal match against Sinner.
With Alcaraz, Sinner, and De Minaur qualifying, the ATP Finals moved one step closer to an exciting end. Fans are now looking forward to the semifinals, which could bring another Alcaraz–Sinner showdown, one of the most popular matchups in tennis today.
