Alaska Landslide Kills 1, Injures 3 in Ketchikan; Evacuations Issued

In Ketchikan, Alaska, a landslide struck on Sunday afternoon, resulting in one fatality and injuring three others. The incident, which occurred around 4 p.m., led to extensive damage to homes and infrastructure, prompting a mandatory evacuation of residents in the affected areas. Emergency declarations were issued by both Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy and local leaders, including Borough Mayor Rodney Dial and City Mayor Dave Kiffer.

The landslide, which hit the southern tip of Alaska’s Inside Passage, severely impacted multiple homes. The injured were transported to Ketchikan Medical Center; one was treated and released, while two remain hospitalized. A shelter was established at Ketchikan High School to accommodate those displaced.

Governor Dunleavy and local officials mobilized resources for the response, with a Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management Response Specialist and federal Department of Transportation personnel scheduled to arrive. Power restoration efforts were underway, with some areas reconnected by 8:15 p.m. and others still facing outages due to damaged infrastructure.

The landslide followed a period of rainfall, which, while not unusual for the region, highlighted the inherent risks in this mountainous and temperate rainforest area. Meteorologist Andrew Park from the National Weather Service noted that while the landslide's timing and impact were unexpected, landslides are a known risk in the area, with prior events in Wrangell and Haines also illustrating the danger.

The event has led to renewed discussions about the impacts of climate change on landslide risks, with factors such as melting permafrost, retreating glaciers, and intense storms contributing to the increasing frequency and severity of such incidents. The region, known for its steep terrain and heavy rainfall, remains on high alert as crews continue to manage the aftermath and monitor potential secondary landslide risks.
