Ahmedabad – As the nation reels from Thursday’s Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crash near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, investigators now believe a loss or reduction in engine thrust during takeoff may be a critical factor in the disaster wsj.com.
The London-bound flight, carrying 242 people, lifted off but reached only about 625 feet before there was a sudden drop in power. Within seconds, the aircraft plummeted into a residential area, resulting in more than 100 fatalities onboard and several on the ground. Nearly 100 people on the ground, including medical students, were injured in the impact and fire.
Teams from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) have joined forces with engineers from Boeing and Rolls‑Royce—the Dreamliner’s engine maker—to comb through the black boxes. Data from the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder is being analyzed to confirm whether an engine failed to deliver the thrust needed to climb safely.
“The early focus on thrust issues could explain why the plane struggled to gain height so quickly,” said an aviation expert. But authorities caution that pilot response, maintenance records, and other mechanical factors are also under review. Full conclusions may take months.
Meanwhile, search-and-rescue teams have secured the crash site. Wreckage is being carefully inspected for broken parts, fuel system clues, and signs of bird strikes or fuel contamination. Investigators warn that multiple causes often combine to trigger such tragic events.
As families await answers, the Tata Group, which owns Air India, announced a ₹1 crore compensation for each family of the deceased. The pledge also covers medical expenses for the injured and support for the nearby BJ Medical College hostel damaged in the crash. Company Chairman N. Chandrasekaran said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected. We stand ready to help in every way possible.”
Air India has also grounded its remaining 787 fleet for thorough checks. CEO Campbell Wilson visited the site, offering condolences and assuring that safety remains the top priority.
On the political front, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken to the Civil Aviation Minister, stressing fast and transparent action. A government helpline has been set up to help families locate loved ones and access compensation details.

This crash marks the first fatal incident for Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner since its debut in 2011, raising fresh questions about aircraft safety and engine reliability. Boeing has pledged full cooperation, while the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) stand ready to assist upon request.
As the probe continues, the world watches closely. Final findings from the black box analysis and wreckage examination will be crucial to prevent future tragedies and restore confidence in long-haul air travel.
