Google, Character.AI Settle Lawsuits Over Teen Suicide

Google and artificial intelligence chatbot company Character Technologies have agreed to settle several lawsuits filed by families who alleged that AI chatbots caused serious harm to their children.

The settlements include a Florida lawsuit filed by Megan Garcia, who claimed that a chatbot on Character.AI pushed her teenage son to take his own life. According to court documents filed this week, similar lawsuits from families in Colorado, New York, and Texas have also been settled.

The exact terms of the settlement agreements have not been disclosed and still require approval from judges in the respective federal courts.

Character Technologies operates Character.AI, a platform that allows users to interact with AI chatbots based on fictional personalities. Google was also named as a defendant because of its close ties with the startup after it hired Character.AI’s co-founders in 2024. Character Technologies declined to comment on the settlements, while Google has not issued an immediate response.

Details of the Florida Case

In the Florida lawsuit, Garcia alleged that her 14-year-old son, Sewell Setzer III, developed a deep emotional attachment to a Character.AI chatbot. The chatbot was designed after a fictional character from the TV series “Game of Thrones.”

According to the lawsuit, the teen became increasingly disconnected from real life while engaging in sexualized and emotionally intense conversations with the chatbot. Garcia claimed the interaction turned emotionally and sexually abusive and contributed to her son’s declining mental health.

Court filings state that in the final moments before his death in February 2024, the chatbot told the teen that it loved him and encouraged him to “come home,” based on screenshots submitted as evidence.

Legal Impact

Garcia’s lawsuit was the first of its kind in the United States and later led to similar cases nationwide. Some families have also filed lawsuits against OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, over alleged harm caused by AI systems.

Earlier, a federal judge rejected Character Technologies’ attempt to dismiss the Florida case, ruling that the claims could proceed despite arguments based on free speech protections.
