His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Second Deputy Ruler of Dubai and President of the UAE National Olympic Committee (UAE NOC), emphasized the UAE’s prominent role as a global leader in advancing human potential. Through its world-class venues and infrastructure, the UAE has become a hub for international scientific forums, enabling long-term strategies and developments across various sectors. These initiatives ultimately contribute to improving the quality of life for people worldwide, Sheikh Ahmed noted.
His Highness extended a warm welcome to participants attending the 38th International Federation of Sports Medicine (FIMS) World Congress of Sports Medicine, which will kick off tomorrow at the Dubai World Trade Centre. The four-day event is regarded as one of the most significant gatherings in the field of sports medicine, focusing on the health, safety, and overall well-being of athletes. In his address, Sheikh Ahmed stressed that maintaining excellence in sports is directly linked to the quality of medical care provided to athletes. This can only be achieved by adhering to established scientific principles and international best practices, he said. Such an approach not only supports athletes in achieving their goals but also elevates their performance as they represent their countries on the global stage. The periodic recommendations that arise from scientific forums like this congress serve as invaluable resources for researchers, practitioners, and sports enthusiasts. These insights facilitate the development of innovative solutions, foster the exchange of knowledge, and promote skill-building across diverse sectors. The studies and research presented by the elite participants enrich the field and open up new pathways for advancements in sports medicine, His Highness added.
Under the patronage of Sheikh Ahmed, the congress is being organised by the UAE National Olympic Committee, specifically the Sports Medicine Committee. Co-hosts of the event include the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), the Emirates Physiotherapy Society, and the Emirates Society of Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine. The congress is expected to feature 16 sessions led by 130 speakers, six workshops, and the presentation of 304 research papers. More than 30 supporting entities will participate, and representatives from over 70 countries will attend, making it a truly international event.
Sessions and Workshops to Explore Key Topics in Sports Medicine
The congress will open with a panel discussion on ‘The Future of Sports Medicine and Sports Science in the GCC: Opportunities and Challenges,’ setting the stage for insightful conversations. This will be followed by a lecture titled ‘Self-Regulation and Self-Responsibility,’ focusing on the consequences of physical inactivity. Throughout the event, a wide array of lectures will delve into specialized tracks in sports medicine, physical therapy, and sports science. Topics include medical care during marathons, biomechanics, and strategies for pain management.
The congress will also explore emerging trends in sports science and physical performance. Presentations will cover subjects such as ‘Training Load and Recovery,’ ‘The Use of Technology and Artificial Intelligence in Sports,’ and ‘The Role of the Global Alliance for Promoting Physical Activity in Reducing Chronic Disease Risk.’ Other topics include the latest advancements in genetic testing for athlete performance, injury risk assessment, and proactive approaches to managing athlete burnout. There will also be sessions on rehabilitation strategies after hamstring injuries, based on clinical data from over 450 athlete injuries, as well as discussions on anti-doping practices and sports integrity.
Workshops will be another highlight of the congress, offering practical, hands-on training. Among the workshops are ‘New Trends in Sports Rehabilitation,’ ‘Imaging-Detected Sports Injuries in Athletes,’ and ‘Field Management of Athletes with Spinal Injuries.’ Additionally, a dedicated session on ‘Para-Athletes Care in Paralympic Games’ will offer insights into specialized medical care for athletes with disabilities.
Launch of the Young Researcher Award
A key feature of this year’s congress is the launch of the Young Researcher Award in Sports Medicine and Sports Performance. Introduced last year by the Emirates Society of Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine, this national initiative aims to encourage young professionals in the field of sports medicine to pursue research. It is the first award of its kind in the UAE and seeks to foster innovation, offering young researchers a platform to contribute to the field with their findings and ideas. The award also facilitates the development of new solutions and the adoption of best practices in sports medicine and rehabilitation.
With its diverse program of sessions, workshops, and research presentations, the 38th World Congress of Sports Medicine in Dubai is set to offer valuable insights into the future of sports medicine. The event reinforces the UAE's commitment to supporting athletes and advancing the field of sports medicine globally, while providing a platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration among industry experts from around the world
