Afghan man arrested in the U.S. for allegedly plotting an ISIS terror attack on Election Day

An Afghan man named Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, 27, was arrested in Oklahoma for allegedly plotting a terrorist attack on Election Day, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Tawhedi, who entered the U.S. in 2021 on a special immigrant visa, was reportedly acting on behalf of the Islamic State.

The indictment details Tawhedi's online searches for how to access cameras in Washington, D.C., and for states without firearm licensing requirements. He had also visited web cameras of the White House and the Washington Monument.

On Monday, Tawhedi and an underage accomplice were arrested after meeting with FBI assets to purchase two AK-47 rifles and ammunition. Following his arrest, Tawhedi indicated that the attack was intended to target large crowds, with both he and his co-conspirator expecting to die as martyrs.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland emphasized the ongoing commitment to combat ISIS threats and prosecute individuals attempting to terrorize Americans. In a recent "homeland threat assessment," the Department of Homeland Security warned that the U.S. threat environment is expected to remain high due to factors such as the upcoming 2024 election and geopolitical tensions, including the conflict in Gaza.

The assessment noted that lone offenders and small groups pose the greatest threat, while foreign terrorist organizations like ISIS and al-Qaeda continue to aim for attacks within the U.S. The Islamic State has a history of extreme violence, having executed thousands in its quest for power before being defeated territorially in Iraq in 2017 and Syria in 2019.
