In the ongoing investigation into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, Sanjoy Roy's mother-in-law has provided shocking revelations about his past behavior. According to her, Roy, who is the prime suspect in the heinous crime, had a history of domestic violence, including a severe incident where he allegedly "bashed" his wife, who was three months pregnant at the time, resulting in a miscarriage. The mother-in-law, expressing her deep frustration and anger, has demanded the death penalty for Roy and suggested that he could not have acted alone in the crime.
She recounted that Roy's behavior towards her daughter was abusive and tumultuous, which led to a police complaint being filed against him. "Initially, everything was good for six months, but things changed drastically. He thrashed my daughter when she was pregnant, causing her to miscarry. I had to bear all her medical expenses," she told news agency ANI. She further stated, "Sanjay was not good. Hang him or do whatever you want with him. I won’t speak about the crime, but he couldn’t have done it alone."

In response to the case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has intensified its efforts. On Monday, CBI officials interrogated Roy to determine if he acted alone in the alleged crime. They also visited Kolkata Police's headquarters to discuss the investigation with officers who were previously involved. A local court granted the CBI permission to conduct a polygraph test on Roy, though a date for this test has yet to be scheduled. As per legal procedures, Roy must be presented before a magistrate to consent to the polygraph examination.
The brutal case has sparked widespread outrage and protests across several cities, with calls for stringent justice. The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the matter and will hear the case on Tuesday, with a bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. On August 18, the CBI team conducted 3D laser mapping in the emergency ward of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the victim was found.
In addition, the West Bengal government has established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe allegations of financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College from January 2021 onwards. The SIT has been granted access to all necessary documents and is required to submit its preliminary report within a month.
