At the recommendation of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority’s (ADAFSA) Collaborating Centre for Camel Diseases has embarked on a crucial mission to assist the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture in addressing a mysterious camel disease affecting several East African nations. This initiative extends to countries including Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and Sudan, where unexplained camel deaths have been reported.

In July 2024, a specialized technical delegation from ADAFSA’s Collaborating Centre for Camel Diseases arrived in Ethiopia. The team, comprised of experts in camel health, collaborated with Ethiopian officials to investigate the outbreak. Their goal is to identify the causative agent of the disease and to develop effective prevention and treatment strategies.

The Reference Collaborating Centre for Camel Diseases, accredited by the OIE, is renowned for its expertise in diagnosing and treating camel diseases. The centre is a global leader in scientific research and advanced veterinary services related to camel health. It plays a pivotal role in managing epidemic diseases, promoting best practices in camel breeding and care through training programs, workshops, and international conferences.

The Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture has reported that over the past twenty years, the country has experienced significant camel mortality due to an unknown disease. This outbreak has severely impacted pastoral communities that depend on camels for their livelihood, causing extensive economic and social damage.

His Excellency Saeed Al Bahri Salem Al Ameri, Director General of ADAFSA, highlighted the importance of combating animal diseases, particularly those that threaten food security. He stated, “Our collaboration with OIE and East African nations is vital for enhancing our collective efforts to safeguard animal health and protect livestock.”

Al Ameri further emphasized the UAE’s prominent role in biosecurity, attributing this to its scientific expertise, robust infrastructure, and cutting-edge technical equipment. “This partnership not only underscores the UAE’s commitment to global efforts in combating animal diseases but also reinforces our leading role in protecting animal health and food security worldwide,” he added.

The ongoing mission reflects ADAFSA’s dedication to utilizing its advanced veterinary resources to identify, control, and mitigate the impact of the disease. This initiative strengthens ADAFSA’s position as a global leader in the fight against animal diseases and underscores its commitment to international collaboration in safeguarding animal health.
