On Thursday, October 24th, Abu Dhabi's iconic landmarks were illuminated in blue and purple to mark World Polio Day, an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about the global fight against polio. This initiative aims to galvanize momentum toward eradicating the disease, which remains a significant health challenge in some parts of the world.

The buildings lit in these vibrant colors included prominent structures such as the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), Mubadala Tower, Emirates Palace, Khalifa University, and Al Ain Municipality. The choice of colors is significant; purple represents the dye used to mark the finger of children who have received their oral polio vaccine, symbolizing the commitment to immunization and disease prevention.
Polio, a highly infectious disease that primarily affects children, once posed a grave threat worldwide, paralyzing an estimated 1,000 children daily and infecting hundreds of thousands each year. In the late 1980s, polio was endemic in more than 125 countries. Thanks to extensive vaccination efforts, cases of wild poliovirus have plummeted by 99.9 percent since 1988, with only Afghanistan and Pakistan still reporting endemic wild poliovirus today.
Under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE has emerged as a global leader in the fight against polio. The nation has been pivotal in supporting the delivery of life-saving vaccines to vulnerable and hard-to-reach children around the world. Since 2011, Sheikh Mohamed has personally committed over US$381 million to bolster global polio eradication efforts, with funds allocated through initiatives like Reaching the Last Mile.
The illumination of Abu Dhabi's landmarks serves as a powerful reminder of the UAE's ongoing dedication to ending polio and ensuring that no child suffers from this preventable disease.
