The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) has won the Startup Ecosystem Stars Award 2024. The award was presented on December 4, 2024, in Paris, during the second Startup Ecosystem Stars Awards. These awards celebrate groups that build strong systems where startups, businesses, and governments work together. Abu Dhabi received this award for its role in improving healthcare.

Since 2021, DoH has supported 80 healthcare startups. These startups have created 926 new jobs and helped grow the healthcare sector by 35.8% each year.

A big part of DoH’s success is the HealthX program. HealthX was made in partnership with New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) and startAD. It helps startups by providing good facilities, advice from experts, and chances to test their ideas. HealthX helps turn new ideas into real solutions for healthcare in Abu Dhabi.

Dr. Asma Al Mannaei, Executive Director of the Health Life Science Sector at DoH, said, “Innovation is key to Abu Dhabi’s vision of creating one of the best healthcare systems in the world. This award from ICC shows our commitment to change healthcare with new ideas and strong partnerships. Programs like HealthX and our work with universities help make Abu Dhabi a leader in healthcare. Our partnerships with over 20 global institutions and this award show that we are committed to changing healthcare and making a global impact.”

DoH has also worked to make the approval process for new healthcare ideas faster and easier. By making the rules simpler, it has reduced the time needed to bring ideas to market from months to just weeks. DoH has given over AED 19 million in grants to 11 projects through the Healthcare Research and Innovation Fund. These grants support cancer research, technology-based healthcare solutions, public health testing, and managing long-term diseases.

John W.H. Denton AO, Secretary General of ICC, said, “Innovation helps grow the economy, and these awards show how startups and companies can work together. We are proud to honor Abu Dhabi for its contributions to global healthcare innovation.”

DoH also runs the Academic Healthcare Innovation Challenge. This program works with universities like NYUAD, Abu Dhabi University, Khalifa University, and Higher Colleges of Technology. It encourages students and researchers to find new solutions to healthcare problems and builds a future of innovation.

By winning the Startup Ecosystem Stars Award, Abu Dhabi joins the world’s top innovators. The award highlights DoH’s efforts to create a healthcare system that helps everyone, while also helping Abu Dhabi become a knowledge-based economy.
