Abu Dhabi Health Department and Ma'an Raise Over AED 15 Million for Health Research Grant

The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) and the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma'an have successfully raised over AED 15 million to support healthcare research and innovation initiatives in Abu Dhabi. This significant achievement was highlighted during the inaugural Abu Dhabi Global Healthcare Week 2024, underscoring the collaborative efforts between DoH, Ma'an, and key community stakeholders.

This initiative aligns with DoH’s ongoing commitment to revolutionizing the healthcare landscape in the region by harnessing the power of science and technology. The department has implemented numerous programs aimed at empowering researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs to tackle pressing healthcare challenges. These initiatives reinforce Abu Dhabi's status as a global hub for life sciences and a nurturing environment for healthcare innovation, thereby ensuring the health and well-being of residents in the emirate and beyond.

In line with its vision to transition from reactive to preventive healthcare, DoH has prioritized several research areas. These include cell and gene research, precision medicine, neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory diseases, cancer diagnosis and treatment, behavioral health for People of Determination, emergency preparedness for emerging infectious diseases, longevity and life extension studies, smart hospitals and clinics, telemedicine, and metabolic syndromes.

Her Excellency Dr. Noura Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of DoH, emphasized the department's dedication to enhancing Abu Dhabi’s reputation as a global leader in life sciences and healthcare innovation. She stated, "DoH remains committed to collaborating with distinguished partners across the sector to strengthen our position as a global life sciences hub and incubator for healthcare innovation. We recognize the essential role that research and innovation play in improving the effectiveness and efficiency of our healthcare system, ensuring that all community members receive timely and high-quality care."

Recognizing funding as a potential challenge for healthcare research, DoH is proactively addressing this issue by launching various programs and initiatives in partnership with local and international organizations. The goal is to foster a robust culture of research and innovation within the healthcare sector, supporting projects that tackle urgent healthcare issues. The department aims to fortify connections among healthcare institutions, academia, and global collaborators involved in clinical research and trials. These partnerships are designed to empower healthcare professionals to transition their pre-clinical research into practical applications and initiate clinical trials.

DoH has gained recognition both regionally and globally for its instrumental role in advancing research and innovation across various domains, including artificial intelligence, medical devices, telemedicine, digital platforms, big data, assistive technologies, wearable devices, and augmented virtual reality. The department has successfully incubated over 85 startups, collaborating with local and global partners to enhance Abu Dhabi’s burgeoning health-tech ecosystem.

Additionally, DoH regularly introduces dedicated research grants aimed at supporting researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs within Abu Dhabi’s healthcare landscape. These grants offer institutions and individuals the chance to secure funding of up to AED 2 million for their projects, fostering knowledge creation and addressing critical challenges that will shape the future of healthcare for generations to come.
