The Abu Dhabi Federal Appeals Court conducted a session for Case No. 87 of 2023 State Security, a legal proceeding involving charges against individuals and entities accused of forming and managing a terrorist organization, as well as money laundering. The case, distinct from Case No. 79 of 2012 State Security, centers on the alleged activities of the "Justice and Dignity Committee."
The court session, spanning five hours, featured the Public Prosecution presenting its plea in the presence of the accused. The prosecution provided evidence, including technical reports, audio-visual material, and written documents, aimed at establishing the guilt of the defendants. The charges encompass forming and managing a terrorist organization and laundering proceeds from these criminal activities.
During the proceedings, the prosecution emphasized the unique nature of this case compared to the earlier one, stating that it is not a retrial of the accused from Case No. 79 of 2012 State Security. The evidence presented included confessions and statements by the defendants, aligning with State Security Apparatus investigations. Media experts' testimonies and reports, analyzing the defendants' media and electronic activities, further contributed to the prosecution's case.
The prosecution contended that the defendants played a role in establishing and managing the "Justice and Dignity Committee," allegedly dedicated to instigating unrest, organizing protests and demonstrations against the state, and inciting violence against security services. The charges also involve creating clashes to cause maximum bloodshed.
The court session witnessed the presence of defense counsels representing the defendants, along with the families of the accused and representatives from various media outlets.
The court adjourned, scheduling the continuation of the Public Prosecution's pleas for a session on Thursday, February 15, 2024.
Meanwhile, Dr. Hamad Saif Al Shamsi, the UAE's Attorney-General, has taken legal action by referring 84 defendants, primarily associated with the Muslim Brotherhood (designated as a terrorist organization in the UAE), to the Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeal. The charges against them include establishing a separate clandestine organization with the intent to commit acts of violence and terrorism within the UAE. The legal proceedings underscore the government's commitment to addressing security concerns and maintaining stability within the country.
